Thinning and deadwooding:

Thinning and deadwoodingThinning and deadwoding

The anatomical design of trees is based on what their environment was for the last several hundred thousand years. This environment was a dense forest consisting of little light except at the very tops, and virtually no exposure to high winds because of the shelter afforded by the neighboring trees. Now the same species of trees exist in a brand new environment created by humans within the last 100 years. The lack of competition for light, water, and nutrients results in their growing many branches and getting overly fat and happy. They are incapable of evolving as fast as their new environment and can not support the abundant growth and weight now afforded them while at the same time being exposed to winds, snow, pollution, and changing water tables. The solution to this problem is thinning and deadwooding. Our Arborists, trained in the anatomy of trees and and skilled in their care will climb your trees, removing laterals and smaller branches which would not have grown normally and decrease the potential wind sail of your trees. Branches which are crossing, dead or diseased will be removed and the ends of overly laden branches will be thinned . This procedure results in a tree of the same shape and height, but with 35% less density, no weak crotches or branch attachments, no deadwood, and branches which are not too heavy on the ends. An average tree after pruning will allow much more light through its canopy, require little if any maintenance for the next five to ten years, will look beautiful, and will be much safer. This procedure is a much more cost effective way to make you and your trees happy in the long run and is far superior to outdated practices such as topping, gaffing, pollard cutting, over-thinning (which produces yet more sucker growth), lifting of canopy (which makes the tree top heavy and more prone to failure) and outright removal. Our arborists will also inspect from close proximity the entire canopy of your tree while they are up there and notify you if they discover dangerous decay unseen from the ground and or signs of terminal pathogens which would make the thinning of such a tree counter-productive. Proper tree care costs less, looks better, and gives you the best value for long term maintenance and your property.
